Journalists in the state have been reminded of the need to effectively market the projects and programmes of the state government for sustainable growth. The commissioner for information, Mr Charles Udoh, made the appeal when the 2019 Press Week Committee of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) visited him in office to intimate him on the forthcoming event. Udoh observed that with the Gov. Udom Emmanuel industrial revolution, the future of Akwa Ibom was brighter as evident in the just-inaugurated flour mills, plywood factory and the Ibom Deep Seaport project. He maintained that the media community has a role to play by using their platforms to market the products of the companies, just as they stand a chance to be engaged as media managers having built their capacity in the job. The information boss said he was excited of the journey started by the leadership, particularly in the area of professionalism and the array of activities line up for the event, adding that with these, the new leadership of the union had demonstrated to be focused and pragmatic in approach towards making Akwa Ibom NUJ a brand. Udoh pointed out that the theme of the programme and contents as presented were devoid of jamboree, but a type that would add value to the union and the state. He advised the leadership not to relent in sanitizing its rank and file, even with the use of stick and carrot approach for only professionals to remain in the practice. Udoh also implored the Etuk-led executive to sustain the tempo for the union to become a brand and command respect in the society. He observed that the future of Akwa Ibom would be brighter with the industrial revolution of Gov Udom Emmanuel such as the Ibom Deep Seaport project. The chairman, Akwa Ibom State Council of the NUJ, Comrade Amos Etuk, said the committee which was constituted recently comprised of members imbued with experience to deliver the best ever Press Week. He explained that the theme of this year's celebration which captures peace for necessary development, was designed to change the narrative of the people towards togetherness and sustainable development. Etuk hinted that intellectuals have been drawned for discussion on how to strengthen the existing peace to maximize the peace attained for growth. He said that the new leadership of the NUJ in the state was assidously working to sanitize the union with a compendium of 500 registered journalists which include Sport Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) and the National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ). Etuk appreciated the government for implementating the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) for the union. He assured of the union's strong partnership with the ministry and solicited for support towards the successful hosting of the event. Earlier, the chairman of the committee, Comrade Nsibiet John, said the committee came to intimate the commissioner on the 2019 NUJ Press Week and to seek for support towards a successful event. He stressed that the committee sought to organize a five- star event with the theme: Strengthening the Peace and Unity Towards Sustainable Development in Akwa Ibom State: The Role of Journalists. The committee chairman listed activities lined up for the week-long programme to include: a thanksgiving service on Sunday, December 8, 2019 at the Grace Family, Ibom Hall, Uyo; Monday will be paper presentation; while panel discussions and interactive sessions with security heads will take place on Tuesday; then free medical outreach and visit to orphanages on Wednesday, and Thursday slated for sports and lastly, Friday scheduled for gala/award night. He invited the commissioner to be part of the celebration and as a footballer to play for the print media in the football match.
