Pelican Stars Protest Non-Payment Of Salaries For 14 Months

Pelican Stars Football Club of Calabar has again protested the non payment of their 14 months salaries even as the players on Wednesday blocked governor's office gates with sleeping mats Two months ago the players who were owed 12 months made the same protests but all to no avail. Captain of the team, Miss Hodo Williams who spoke with Journalists at the governor's gate on behalf of the team, said they would all remain at the entrance of the governor's office and would not move unless they were paid. According to her "We are owed 14 months salaries, this month inclusive and we will sleep at the entrance of the governor's office unless we are addressed by Gov. Ben Ayade or his deputy. Williams said "we spoke to our chairman yesterday and it was still the same old story. We want to meet the governor to grant his final approval for us to be paid. We are tired of waiting from last year. She said the players are facing severe hardship as a result of the unpaid wages and called on the state governor to address their concerns. The Chairman of the Calabar female football club, Mr Kombor Sam, in his reaction said "every recommendations as directed by the governor had been fulfilled and the papers sent to his office, what was left was his endorsement. Kombor further said that "I am also helpless because we have done all we were told to do, all we are waiting for now is the authorisation of payment and that only comes from the governor. Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner for Sports Mr Offu Aya said the ministry had done all it was supposed to do and was awaiting the governor's approval.
