Obaseki's Victory Has Deepened Nigeria's Democracy- Shaibu

The wife of the Edo State deputy governor, Mrs Maryann Shaibu, has said the outcome of the Edo governorship election has remarkably changed the narrative of Nigeria's electoral exercise and provided evidence of a maturing democratic process where outcomes are in tune with the public expectations of voters.

Shaibu, who noted that making the votes of the electorate count has restored the once elusive confidence in our electoral system, equally advocated the need for the appropriate constitutional provisions in order to preserve and sustain democracy and democratic institutions in Nigeria as weak institutions without proper legal backing undermine democracy.

She made this statement while speaking during a "thank you visit to Owan East, Etsako Central and Etsako East local governments, all in Edo North Senatorial zone while she stressed the need to develop a home grown democracy. She said: "There is an urgent need for us as a nation to develop a home grown democracy that's consistent with our local socioeconomic and cultural environment. I am advocating for a home grown democracy due to the lessons learnt from the just-concluded Edo governorship election.

The wife of the deputy governor also frowned against the danger of hijacking political parties, especially in determining primary elections. "We must all also guard against the danger ahead of our democracy due to the unrestrained powers of political parties in the indiscriminate disqualification of their candidates without monitoring mechanism to question such action,

she cautioned. Speaking on the essence of her visit, Mrs Maryann Shaibu said: "I am here to thank you people for standing for the truth. You are the true democrats and you surely will reap the fruit of your labour. I promised to return to say thank you and here I am today to fulfil my promise. "I was in Owan West, Etsako West and Akoko Edo Local Governments yesterday.

This is to show that the Obaseki administration is people-oriented. Development has been built around the people and not around an individual. "Too many strong personalities battling with weak institutions of government are major hindrances to our democracy. We can't have a peaceful democratic process in Nigeria without independence and autonomy of our public institutions.

While assuring that Obaseki and Shaibu will live up to expectations, Mrs Shaibu said: "It's hard for God not to work when useable vessels are available. Obaseki and Shaibu are useable and available vessels in the hands of God and that means that Edo is in safe hands. You have not misplaced your vote by voting for the PDP, she said.

The administration will continue to encourage and support business entrepreneurs to set up and operate industrial clusters of micro, small and medium scale industries in various parts of o the state. She noted that it is the basic responsibility of government to foster the growth of the industrial sector and promote the rapid development and growth of the state.

Edo currently offers a new ambience of commercial hub for doing profitable business without the stress and strain of multiple tax regimes. It's the extent to which democracy gives voice to the citizens and empowers them to demand accountability that guarantees the survival of democracy in Nigeria. Democracy will lose credibility if it doesn't impact upon the lives of the people, she added.
